Homecoming Hokie Hike with University Arborist Jamie King ‘10

Sunday, Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The trees of Virginia Tech hold an important place on campus and within the hearts of Hokies everywhere. Join University Arborist and College of Natural Resources and Environment alumnus Jamie King ’10 for a three-mile hike through campus. Hikers will learn about the diversity of the more than 10,000 trees on campus and the legacy they represent while enjoying the beauty of fall in Blacksburg. Registration cap: 30.

Halloween Hokie Hike: Bald Knob and War Spur at Mountain Lake Conservancy

Sunday, Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with time for hikers to enjoy their own packed lunches

Join College of Natural Resources and Environment Geography Instructor Stewart Scales ‘09, ‘11 for two of the most popular hikes in the area! Hikers will learn about the history of Mountain Lake and local geology, landforms, and flora as they take in beautiful views of West Virginia and the New River Valley, as well as Virginia’s largest distribution of American Chestnuts. Hikers will travel about four miles total at the two locations, including a steep ascent of .4 miles. Registration cap: 15.

Hokie Hike: Pandapas Pond with John Seiler, Virginia Tech’s Dr. Dendro

Saturday, Nov. 6 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Join the College of Natural Resources and Environment’s Dr. Dendro (John Seiler, tree physiology specialist) at Pandapas Pond, one of the U.S. Forest Service’s most popular recreational areas, for a casual walk on easy trails. Seiler will discuss ecological processes that are driving ecosystem changes around the pond, and hikers will be able to discuss—and taste!—common and unique tree species found in the area. Registration cap: 25.
