R.E. Sorensen Professor in Finance Janine Hiller and Professor Roberta S. (Robin) Russell will explore cybersecurity and what Virginia Tech is doing about it in two talks on cybersecurity.
Our lives are increasingly connected by technology in ever more personal ways; to make life easier, even the refrigerator in our house can be connected through apps to networks that can help us stay healthy. That ease also means, however, that we are more vulnerable to hackers, who violate our privacy by attacking every connected thing, from the activity tracker on our wrist to the refrigerator in our house.
Bad actors from across the world harm individuals, and they can take control of connected things to attack larger targets for far-reaching damage. This talk connects the dots between the “internet of things,” personal privacy, and cybersecurity, and invites a discussion about the future as we address these threats.
Hiller is the R.E. Sorensen Professor in finance, professor of business law, and the director of integrated security in the Pamplin College of Business. Her research and teaching focus on the ways that technology, law, policy, and ethics are intertwined. Privacy, data law and ethics, and cybersecurity are specific areas of emphasis. Her talked is called "Fighting for Cybersecurity: An introduction to a wicked problem."
Russell is department head of business information technology in Pamplin. She is a Virginia Tech alum (Class of 1976) in her 35th year at Virginia Tech. Robin teaches and does research in supply chains, healthcare quality and cybersecurity analytics.
She is co-author of "Operations and Supply Chain Management" in its 10th edition at Wiley, and former president of the APICS Foundation, a professional association for supply chain managers. Robin enjoys working with students, faculty and industry, and, of course, sharing her expertise with fellow Hokies. Her talked is called "Hokies for Cyber - Preparing Hokies for careers in cybersecurity."
