Virginia Vintner's Table

Participating Wineries

logoThrough the years, the winery has led in establishing the credibility of the Virginia appellation with an array of vitis vinifera wine varietals, cultivating wines of a European heritage which wholly justify this new terroir. We are conscious of a joyful debt to that cultural and culinary tradition, not merely in grape cultivation, but in crafting wines of inherent food-friendliness.

We have shown how the most probing articulation of the exceptionality of this terroir, will always come from wines bearing a universally recognised varietal frame of reference. Here, then, are wines showing no contradiction between the most beautiful commemoration of place, and the honoring of expectations embraced by time.

Burnley logoBurnley Vineyards is one of the oldest Vineyards in the Monticello Viticultural Area. We have 31 acres of vineyards - Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Orange Muscat, Muscat Blanc, Chambourcin, Vidal and Norton. Burnley Vineyards is a family operation. C.J. Reeder is General Manager, Lee Reeder is the winemaker, Patt Reeder handles Sales and Dawn Reeder tasting and tours.

cardinalFamily owned and operated, Cardinal Point Vineyard and Winery lies in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge, in the shadow of Afton Mountain. Years ago, while stationed in the small city of Bad Kreuznach, Germany on the banks of the Nahe River, Paul and Ruth Gorman discovered a passion for the Riesling wines that were crafted with care in the little vineyards surrounding the town. It was then and there that they decided to add their own vineyard to their retirement plans.

logoChateau Morrisette is the result of a love affair between the Morrisette family and the rural Virginia countryside. In 1978, William, Nancy and David Morrisette planted the first vines and the vision of Chateau Morrisette became a small reality. Nancy Morrisette stated in 1988 that the winery began as a hobby that soon got out of hand. David Morrisette is a graduate of Mississippi State University’s first class in enology and viticulture. In 1982, the first commercial wines were produced, a modest 2,000 gallons, under the Woolwine Winery label. For more, please visit them on the web.

logoAfter establishing First Colony Winery in December of 2000, Randy began hiring a team of well-trained winemakers, viticulturists, and management staff. A strong foundation was laid with First Colony's first wines released in March, 2002. The 2001 vintage proved to be a promising one for the winery, winning over 20 awards at state, national, and international wine competitions.

gray ghostGray Ghost, a family owned and operated winery, is putting Virginia on the international wine map by producing internationally acclaimed wines from immaculate vineyards. All grapes are hand-picked and wine is aged in premium oak barrels. Full-bodied reds are unfiltered and lighter-styled wines are fermented at lower temperatures to enhance fruit character. This emphasis on quality resulted in Gray Ghost being named "Best of the East" by Vineyard and Winery Management Magazine four consecutive years! For more, please visit them on the web.

hickory logoWe are family owned and operated vineyard and winery located in the Smith Mountain Lake area of Virginia.  Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east side of Smith Mountain Lake, the vineyard was once a cattle farm and the winery was once the homestead.  The picnic area overlooks the vineyard and is shaded by a beautiful old ash tree.  This quiet, country setting is perfect for relaxing afternoons while enjoying the simple pleasures in life.

We invite you to visit our vineyard and winery and experience its quiet country charm.  Tours of the vineyard and winery are available.  Wine tastings are complimentary.

horton imageWine lover and entrepreneur Dennis Horton began his winemaking venture with a small home vineyard in Madison County, Virginia in 1983.  It did not take him long to realize that, although the Virginia summers were warm enough to ripen almost any grape variety, the humid conditions favored growing grapes with thicker skins and loose clusters.  The search was on for varieties that would flourish in the Virginia growing region and had the capacity to make some of the finest wines in the world. For more, please visit them on the web.

Jefferson logo

In 1981, the owners of Mazzei’s old property decided to resurrect the vineyards.  Under the guidance of farm manager and winemaker Gabrielle Rausse, they replanted the vineyards Mazzei had first established in 1774. And thus was the modern-day Jefferson Vineyards established, truly fulfilling Jefferson and Mazzei’s vision conceived some 200 years earlier.

Today, Jefferson Vineyards produces award-winning wines from 20 acres of vineyards, all within sight of both Colle and Monticello.

lake annaThe story of Lake Anna Winery began on a business trip to France in 1981. While traveling through the French countryside, Bill Heidig noticed that the climate and soil conditions of certain grape-growing regions were similar to those on his Spotsylvania farm, and an idea began to take root. Upon his return, he presented the notion of planting grapes to his wife, Ann. After a great deal of thought, the two decided to plant a vineyard and launch a family business. They hired a consultant and started taking seminars on grape growing and winemaking.

linden logoLinden Vineyards is a 5,000 case winery and vineyard situated on the Virginia Blue Ridge, 65 miles west of Washington, D.C. Jim Law, with family help, purchased what was then an abandoned hardscrabble farm in 1983. The first 6 acres were cleared and prepared for planting. The 1985 planting was from vines mostly from cuttings and grafts propagated by our own nursery the previous year. They included Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Vidal and Seyval. Our first vintage was 1987 and the first release and opening of the winery was 1988. For more, please visit them on the web.

Lovingston Winery, located in the rolling countryside of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is dedicated to the production of the highest-quality wines. Primarily family-run along with head winemaker Riaan Rossouw, we take great pride in offering a pleasing experience in every bottle.

naked mountainToday...Naked Mountain now produces over 6,000 cases a year and is open seven days a week. In order to meet demand, a climate controlled warehouse was added for cased goods as was a new building dedicated to barrel storage. In 2003, an acre of Chardonnay was taken out and replanted with more Riesling.

As one of the earliest wineries to grow exclusively vinifera varieties, Bob and Phoebe have continued their pursuit for over 31 years. Through all the years, Naked Mountain has still been able to maintain a "mom and pop" feel. As a small, family owned winery we continue to be dedicated to producing premium Virginia wines

RockbridgeRockbridge Vineyard is the fruition of Shepherd Rouse's dream to make fine wine in his native state of Virginia.

As a boy in 1963 in his hometown of Williamsburg, Rouse found a round green glass bottle seal with the date 1718 embossed on it. The areaeological expert in residence at Colonial Williamsburg at the time, Ivor Noel-Hume identified it as the second oldest dated wine bottle seal yet unearthed in Virginia. Rouse donated it for the Colonial Williamsburg collection. Ten years later on a spring semester abroad in Germany as a Washington and Lee University geology student, Rouse was intrigued by wine. Three years later, back in Germany on a Fulbright scholarship, he decided to learn how, and then to produce fine wine in Virginia.

tours image with dogWhile we may be only the third oldest in the state, founded in 1976, we are the oldest winery in the historic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Please use this site to find us on the map, discover more about us and our wines, and fit some of our events into your schedule. Be sure to call or email us with any questions or requests.

It is with considerable pride and effort that we put the name Shenandoah on our label. We encourage you to sample our efforts by tasting the wine. As an early participant and promoter of Virginia's growing wine industry, we work to set an excellent example of what Virginia has to offer.

logoWhitie Hubert spent 40 successful years in the construction business, but when he retired, the vineyard beckoned. Born and raised on a farm in Ohio, Whitie had spent his youth growing grapes for Welch's Grape Juice Company with his father and brother. So in 1975, the promise of a return to viticulture led Whitie and his wife Margaret to purchase 475 acres of prime Virginia farmland nestled along the Potomac river. In 1985, they built Tarara where, today, they produce award-winning wines.

For Whitie and Margaret, sharing wine is a celebration of life, and sharing their vineyard in this set-apart place is an affirmation of all the things they love best: nature, music, art, and architecture.

Whether you choose to share their celebration at a concert by the lake on a warm summer's eve, picking fruit with your kids in the orchards, hiking 6 miles of trails, or just tasting wines in the Winemaker's cave, Whitie and Margaret welcome you.

logoValhalla Vineyards has been growing grapes and producing award winning estate wines from a 2000 ft. mountaintop overlooking Roanoke Virginia since 1998.  Our 21 acre vineyard produces world class cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot, chardonnay, cab franc and more. Its decomposing granite soils and unique climate (similar to Rhone Valley of France) afford the premiere terrior on the East Coast. For more, please visit them on the web.

logoVeritas Winery, a family business owned by Andrew and Patricia Hodson, opened for business in June 2002; with the help of their daughter Emily and son-in-law Edward Pelton, they have succeeded in consistently producing a range of complex and elegant wines. The idyllic setting is easy to find but hard to leave, located just off I-64 at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The unique wines of Veritas are all of high quality, derived from vitis vinifera with the exception of one French hybrid. Our philosophy is to make wine with the classic, old-style principles of Viticulture and Vinification, at the same time using state of the art technology to capture varietal and regional character.
