Class Programs are supervised by the Alumni Association and consist of activities associated with the class ring, a Virginia Tech tradition dating back to the Class of 1914. Each year, a specially appointed student Ring Design Committee creates a ring unique to each Class. For seventy years, the annual Ring Dance Weekend has been the grand event on campus, with a banquet Friday evening and a formal dance on Saturday. The Corps D Company releases a small pig onto the dance floor after the rings are exchanged, an early Ring Dance tradition still in practice. The HokieBird is now very much a part of Ring Dance, wearing top hat and tux, receiving a HokieBird-sized ring, and dancing on stage. The festivities culminate with the display of fireworks on the Drillfield, the playing of 'Silver Taps,' and the firing of the Skipper Cannon.
Class Officers at Virginia Tech are elected in the spring of their freshmen year and serve for life. Class Officers are automatically members of SAA. Information sessions are held in fall and early winter for those interested in running for any of the eight class officer positions. Interested candidates must petition to run for office and abide by campaigning rules governing the spring election. For more information, contact Laura Wedin, advisor to the class system.
Each class level at Virginia Tech has a listserv that announces Class activities and student programs. Class listservs are determined by a student's academic level as indicated by the registrar's office of Virginia Tech. Because of this, entering students with Advanced Placement credit with be automatically placed on the Class listserv for their academic level. For example, if you have enough credit hours to be included with the Class of 2015 but consider yourself part of the Class of 2014, please email the Class Listmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org and ask to be changed to the appropriate listserv.
To unsubscribe to a Class listserv, email email@example.com and type SIGNOFF CLASS-OF-(your class year) in the BODY of the note, NOT on the subject line.
