Class of 1969 40th Anniversary Reunion

Weekend of September 25 - 27, 2009

Virginia Tech vs Miami

Class of 1969 torch

Fellow ’69 Classmates,

We are just a few months shy of reaching the distinction of being 40 year grads of our alma mater. Yes, “distinction” sounds much better than “getting up there in years.” Nevertheless, older and a bit wiser, we should come back to where it all began for a grand reunion weekend this fall.

The university seems in excellent hands with classmates Steger, Beamer, Smoot, Tillar and Meredith. So, whether it has been months or years since you have been back to campus, we can’t let the 40th pass without a trip back for a traditional ball game weekend to inspect the place! The weekend is September 25-27 when the University of Miami dares to challenge Beamer’s Orange Bowl Champion Hokies. And just a few years ago, a new Alumni Center was opened that Tom Tillar helped design and build. It is our home for the weekend, plus overflow space in hotels very close by. Charlie Steger, Ray Smoot, and Joe Meredith will join Tom there in helping host all of us for our 40th activities.

Events begin Friday evening, and hopefully you can get back earlier during that day to explore parts of the campus. Some areas will look familiar, while others will have some rather spectacular new buildings to see. We have a reception and dinner in the ballroom of the new Alumni complex, which also includes a hotel, conference center and alumni center all attached. Charlie Steger will give us a brief update on the university, and then we’ll have time to visit with each other, reminisce, see who resembles their former selves, and maybe even dance to a few tunes from our era. Yes, the DJ still uses some relics called “albums.”

On Saturday morning, there is a class brunch, and even an earlier optional breakfast for former cadets (that the Corps sponsors). Because game times are set by television schedulers for ACC games just weeks before, we will not know an exact kickoff time until closer to the weekend. As you recall, September weather (when our fall quarters always started) is pleasant, so a great time for us to reunion.

Register now, not later. And plan to join me, our class officers, and our resident classmate hosts for a great reunion. Contact Tom Tillar if you have any questions or have special needs for registration (540/231-6285 or ttillar@vt.edu).
