Old Guard of Virginia Tech
Members of the Old Guard,
On behalf of the Old Guard Advisory Board, I am pleased to extend a warm invitation to you to join in the 2009 Old Guard Reunion to be held Thursday, May 21st through mid-morning on Friday, May 22nd. We extend a special welcome to the newest members of the Old Guard, the Class of ’58 who celebrated their 50th Reunion last fall! We also welcome the Classes of ’39, ’44, ’49 and ’54 who will gather for their special anniversary dinners on Wednesday, May 20th.
For those of us who are not members of classes celebrating a special anniversary, but who plan to arrive early, dinner on your own will be available at The Inn at Virginia Tech in Preston’s Restaurant Wednesday evening (reservations are encouraged – 540/231-0130). Additionally, we have made arrangements for golf at the new Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech with tee times starting at 10:30 am. You may sign-up for golf on the enclosed registration form.
Come and join those with whom you shared your days at Tech, and as always, the Old Guard Reunion will provide a wonderful opportunity to learn of some of the fascinating things happening at our Alma Mater. This year will be no different as we shall hear from and meet some of Tech’s impressive leaders, faculty, staff and students. Our group will receive plenty of attention as we learn about Virginia Tech’s most recent accomplishments… all while having ample time to visit and reminisce with old friends in the Holtzman Alumni Center’s Grand Hall. The highlights of our 2009 Reunion include:
- Presentation by Major General Jerry Allen on the Corps of Cadets
- Lunch and tours in the College of Architecture & Urban Studies’ Cowgill Hall
- Special Presentation: “International Opportunities for Today’s Students,” by Dr. John Dooley, Vice President for Outreach and International Affairs
- An optional tour of the Corps Museum at Brodie Hall by Colonel Rock Roszak
- Breakfast with your College Dean or other faculty to hear latest College news
- Presentations from representatives and students in Athletics, the Corps of Cadets, the Honors College and Cranwell International Center
- Special guest President Charles W. Steger will join our Thursday Banquet
- For the second year in a row, “The Sway Katz,” 19-piece Swing Band, will entertain us at the Banquet! Listen and dance to music we enjoyed while at Virginia Tech!
The Alumni Association has made all the arrangements for our festivities. We will be able to reserve lodging at either the Inn at Virginia Tech or other nearby hotels, and I am assured that parking will be plentiful. Please invite your friends and classmates and make plans to return to VPI this May! The Alumni Association can help if you need any addresses or telephone numbers. If you have any questions, please contact Sam Albimino, Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations, by e-mail at VaTechAlumni@vt.edu or by telephone at 540/231-6285.
In the spirit of Ut Prosim,
“Whitey” Lemmond ’54
President of the Old Guard
