MIT President Susan Hockfield sent the following email to the faculty, students and staff on April 17, commenting on Monday's tragedy at Virginia Tech.
To members of the MIT community:
Yesterday's tragic events at Virginia Tech have shocked and saddened all of us. We offer MIT's condolences to the students, faculty, and staff of Virginia Tech and to their families.
We invite all members of the MIT community to an interdenominational ceremony of healing and reflection, organized by the Institute's chaplains, tomorrow afternoon, Wednesday, April 18, at 4:00 p.m. in the Chapel. We anticipate that in the days to come members of the community will organize additional opportunities to gather in remembrance. At the same time, we encourage those with connections to the Virginia Tech community and those who find themselves particularly disturbed by yesterday's events to contact the many individuals and offices at the Institute who can offer support, including the Mental Health service in MIT Medical and the housemasters and tutors in the residence system.
In the wake of the events at Virginia Tech, many have asked about our preparations in the event of an emergency at MIT. The Institute maintains comprehensive emergency preparedness plans, which are assessed and updated regularly. We are fortunate to be able to rely on the professionalism and expertise of our colleagues in the MIT Police, the Environment, Health, and Safety Office, the Department of Facilities, the Medical Department, and the Housing Office. All of these key operational areas have comprehensive and tested action plans in place, which they would implement in the event of an emergency.
Our thoughts will be with the Virginia Tech community during the days of mourning ahead.
Sincerely,
Susan Hockfield

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,
Please join with me in prayerful and solemn remembrance of the terrible tragedy that occurred this morning at Virginia Tech.
Wes Astin, Dean of the Chapel, and Dave Newcombe, Director of Student Leadership and Engagement, are available in the Panthers Den this afternoon to talk with students about this incident as long as needed. The Monday night worship service at 7:00 p.m. in Vaughn Chapel this evening will be dedicated to the memory of the victims. In addition, the Panther's Den will be open tomorrow at 2:00 p.m., during the same time that a convocation is planned at Virginia Tech, for those on our campus who wish to join in prayer and solidarity with the Blacksburg campus. It is difficult for us to understand these senseless and violent acts, but as a faith-based community we will continue to keep Virginia Tech in our thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely yours,

University of Central Florida
The University of Central Florida held two vigils for the victims at Virginia Tech on the 17th of April. The first was on the main campus (Richard Schmidt and others attended). The other vigil was at their Rosen College of Hospitality Management (near the tourist corridor in Orlando). I attended the second vigil to ensure VT representation at both vigils held by UCF. I was asked to speak at the vigil and I had prepared the following statement "We are all saddened by the tragic events that occurred yesterday at Virginia Tech. Many of the alumni in the Central Florida area have family, friends and other loved ones that have been affected by this tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the students, faculty, and the administrative staff at Virginia Tech. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. Our hearts go out to the friends, classmates and others who witnessed this tragedy. We would like to thank the University of Central Florida for their support, kind thoughts and prayers in our time of need."

Rochester Institute of Technology
On behalf of Rochester Institute of Technology, I offer our deepest condolences and sympathies to the Virginia Tech community, and especially to the family and friends of the victims. This is a national tragedy of unimaginable proportions. I am in shock and deeply saddened by Monday's horrific events. It is difficult to make sense of such a senseless act. We grieve for the victims' families and friends.
On Tuesday, the RIT flag was lowered to half staff in memory of the Virginia Tech victims. At noon, RIT's Center for Religious Life held a special service in the Allen Chapel of the Interfaith Center. This was a time for the RIT community to pray, reflect, support the Virginia Tech community, and begin the healing process. The 30-minute service concluded with the bells tolling for each victim.
We are reaching out to members of our Campus Community seeking assistance in coping with this national tragedy. Counseling services are available for students, faculty and staff at our Counseling Center.
The tragedy at Virginia Tech can happen anywhere at anytime. At RIT, we will continue to work hard to ensure a safe and secure environment for our students, faculty and staff. We must remain vigilant. We must never forget the events of April 16, 2007 in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Bring fellow students, friends and co-workers. This tragedy has touched us all, including those in Tampa Bay and Florida. Monday evening I heard from the mother of a local Tampa Bay high school who received our Chapter’s scholarship this year. She is a teacher. She was called out of class to take a call from her son who was fine. However, he was waiting on word about one of his RA and good friend who hadn’t returned to his dorm yet. My client at Florida Department of Transportation emailed me yesterday to say “Just found out that one of those killed yesterday was the younger brother of a good friend of mine in Toledo. He was an engineering professor. Wow -- what a small world.” In Virginia, a former neighbor of a VTAA Tampa Bay Board past president lost his grandson – a straight A student.
I have been asked repeatedly by the media to comment on what it all means to the vast majority of Tampa Bay residents. It readily became apparent that this could have happened anywhere. As they started releasing the names and photos of those killed, I also was struck by the diversity of those who died – these were truly a cross section of America. They are us. I also see the strength that can be drawn from this event.
We saw the heroic actions of the engineering professor (and Holocaust survivor) who sacrificed his life for his students. We saw a quick thinking engineering student who blocked the door so the killer could not get in one of the classrooms. I’m sure more stories will follow.
Some of the stories you will probably never hear about but clearly come from the heart. Yesterday, a fellow Hokie called me to say that the Tampa Bay Rough Riders are sending at least 100 teddy bears to the mental services agency in Blacksburg.
Last night I saw clips of the Convocation where the attendees rose in a standing ovation in mass support of Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. We feel his pain – he is one of us – he received his bachelor’s, masters, and doctorate all from Virginia Tech. I was moved when thousands spontaneously started our chant, “Let’s Go Hokies!” knowing it is a rallying cry for our sports teams. But now this cheer is signaling the start of the healing process.
Finally, as a parent with freshman in college (not at Virginia Tech), I can’t begin to imagine the feelings of the friends and family of those who lost their lives. I also hurt for the Virginia Tech faculty and staff who feel the moral responsibility to protect as well as educate but know that so many lives were lost in spite of their actions but I have to believe many were saved because of their selflessness.
I’ve been interviewed by nearly every local TV station and paper this week. On Monday, one of the reporters asked me whether this will leave a blackmark on Virginia Tech and would it effect student decisions (and parental approvals) to attend Virgina Tech. I responded to the contrary. I believed that any parent or prospective student would be moved by the character, compassion and pride of the Hokie Nation. Our motto “Ut Prosim” – That I May Serve is more than words. It is reflected in everything a university like Virginia Tech and USF does and aspires to be. Little did I know at the time that this point would be driven home that night for me when my 16 yr old daughter, Rachel, a sophomore at Freedom High School, gave me a big hug and whispered in my ear, “Dad, I still want to go to Virginia Tech”.
Everyone is part of the Hokie Nation this week. Philip L. Winters
MTU Faculty and Staff
In recognition of the tragic events that took place on Monday at Virginia Tech, the Undergraduate Student Government has organized a Candle Light Vigil for this evening (April 18) at 8:00 PM in the Library. The Praise and Effect choir will sing Amazing Grace and Morning has Broken, a few students will speak, and some passages will be read followed by a candle lighting ceremony. Religious leaders and Counseling Service staff will also be available for students to talk to. We hope that every student at Michigan Tech will come to show support for the students and faculty/staff of Virginia Tech.
In addition, as a show of support for our fellow students and faculty/staff colleagues and in lieu of our typical Husky Friday apparel Michigan Tech students/faculty/staff are encouraged to wear orange and maroon on Friday April 20 to honor those killed and show support for the Virginia Tech community.

Local parish HOSTS MEMORIAL Service
SAN ANTONIO, Texas—San Antonio’s largest traditional Anglican parish, announces a memorial service noon Thursday, April 19th, in response to Monday’s 33 killings at Virginia Tech University.
“We needed a way to minister Jesus to our community affected by this,” said parishioner and event organizer, Ms. Cecyl Dolgner. “Doing this memorial service is a wonderful way to reach out for Him, while we mourn the dead in the tragedy. We’re offering it the San Antonio community, especially those in college and their families. This could have happened anywhere, and there have to be folks shocked by it. They need to know the Church is there for them.”
According to The Rev CB “Chip” Harper, the parish will be conducting classical Anglican worship services to ask God’s mercy, while committing the dead to Him. “This is the ancient way of mourning and praying for the departed,” he said. “I’ve found in times of great joy or great sadness, many folks find great comfort in our intercessions and prayers. It’s something we can do for the community—letting them know God’s people pray and care.”
All Saints is a traditional parish in the Anglican model, located at 11122 Link Dr, a block off West Avenue and Larkspur, near Castle Hills. For more information, call 210-344-1920 or visit them on the web at www.allsaintsanglican.net.
Dear Faculty, Staff, and Students:
Earlier this week, the Virginia Tech campus suffered an
unimaginable loss when many members of the campus community were
slain and many others were injured in a senseless act of violence. All Americans were touched by this event, but those of us in higher
education feel a special kinship with our colleagues at Virginia Tech.
Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the entire community of
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University who lost
students, faculty, and staff on Monday, April 16, 2007. A memorial
service honoring students, faculty, and staff who lost their lives at
Virginia Tech will be held on Thursday, April 19, at 10:50 am in the
Quad in front of the Stallions. In addition, students have an
opportunity to share their condolences with the Virginia Tech
community. Banners have been posted on the Paseo of the LBJ Student
Center and students, faculty, and staff at Texas State are encouraged
to write messages which will be sent to Virginia Tech.
Sincerely,

(DES MOINES) Governor Chet Culver has declared Friday, April 20, 2007 a Day of Mourning for the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings.
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine declared Friday a statewide Day of Mourning in Virginia and sent a letter to other governors asking them to join in the effort.
In his letter, Governor Kaine wrote, “As this tragedy impacts not just Virginia, I encourage you to consider standing with Virginia. It is clear that difficult days lie ahead as we all embrace the grieving process that is sure to come. Again, I thank you for your thoughts and prayers and ask that you keep Virginia Tech in your hearts and minds as we all work together to overcome this horrific tragedy.”
Answering Governor Kaine’s request, Governor Culver, a 1988 graduate of Virginia Tech, will hold a brief service near the Liberty Bell at E. 12th Street at 10:50 AM. Following the service, the Governor will ask for a moment of silence and bell will be rung at 11:00 to honor the victims. Where appropriate, the Governor requests that in churches and public institutions across the state, bells be tolled during this time of observance.
“My heart goes out to those whose lives are forever changed by the tragic events that took place on the Virginia Tech campus,” said Governor Chet Culver. “I continue to be distraught that the peace and joy I enjoyed during my time as a Virginia Tech student has been shattered for the thousands of students who live and study there today. I stand with Governor Kaine and offer my prayers and anything I can do as Governor to help ease the pain and find ways to ensure this never happens again.”

From the Rensselaer Community:
The tragic event at Virginia Tech this week has had a profound impact
across the nation, and in particular at colleges and universities. In
light of that event, and of our own recent experience with a potential
threat to our community, I invite the Rensselaer students, faculty, and
staff to come together Friday for a community gathering. The gathering
will take place at 3:00 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the McNeil Room of the
Rensselaer Union.
We will take time then to remember those who died in Virginia, to share
our thoughts on the impact of this tragedy, and to discuss ways we can
achieve as safe an environment as possible in which we can live, work,
and learn in an atmosphere of security and mutual support. We will be
joined by the Vice Presidents, the Deans, members of the faculty, and
representatives of the various offices that provide security and student
and employee services.
Please join me for what I know will be a helpful and supportive
gathering for members of all parts of the Rensselaer family.

Virginia Tech supporters to gather Monday night at Idaho Statehouse
Virginia Tech supporters and other people who want to show support after the shootings at the Blacksburg, Va., university on Monday are planning to gather April 23 at the Idaho Statehouse for a group photo to send to VT students. Adrienne Hendricks, who received an MBA from Virginia Tech in June, and other alumni are looking for Boiseans with connections to the 26,000-student university, and also for people who just want to show support.
They're asking them to gather at 6:30 p.m. Monday wearing Virginia Tech's colors of maroon and orange.
"A picture from Idaho will mean a lot to my friend who is really affected (by the shooting), and I know he'll share it with everyone on campus," Hendricks said, noting that Virginia Tech gatherings have been organized in many states and in other countries. "They need it on campus, and we need it here locally. We need someplace to go and a sense of community."
For more information, call Hendricks at 939-2182 or e-mail her at alh@vt.edu.

Shenandoah Chapter and the Winchester Hokie Club
Prayer Service at Goodson Chapel - Shenandoah University at 3:00 p.m. This service will be officiated by Mr. Doug Rinker, a Tech Alumnus.
Bay Area Hokies and friends of Virginia Tech,
Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, grew up in Blacksburg and the Company has been so kind to offer their corporate meeting center to the local Virginia Tech community as a venue to gather for this event.
We intend to gather as a community on Sunday to reflect on the tragic events on campus this week and have a chance to socialize with fellow alums and friends of the University. Our donations as an alumni chapter and Bay Area community will be earmarked for an endowed scholarship in the name of one or more of the victims of the tragedy, depending on the amount we are able to raise. The minimum for establishing an endowed scholarship fund is $100,000 (interest on this capital will fund an annual scholarship into eternity), so we will set that amount as a minimum goal for our Bay Area community and hope to exceed it significantly with your generosity. This gift will serve as a strong symbol of our support, and will represent for the families and University community a permanent remembrance of the shooting victims. For those who can contribute, please make checks payable to "The Virginia Tech Foundation" (a 501(c)3 entity for tax deductibility), and I will make certain that these funds are directed to this specific cause when I return to Blacksburg next Thursday for our Board of Directors meeting. Please note that many corporations are providing sizable gifts to the University and are matching donations made by all employees. Please be sure to ask your HR representative if such a matching plan exists at your company, as this will double the leverage on every dollar you may be able to contribute. If you are unable to attend the event but would like to contribute, you can direct checks to: Brian Slingerland, 555 California Street, 42nd Floor, San Francisco, CA 94104. I depart for Blacksburg on Wednesday, so if possible please arrange for delivery by Tuesday April 24th.
Detailed logistics for the event are as follows:
Date: Sunday, April 22nd
Time: 5pm PT
Location: Google Headquarters, 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA 94043 - take the second right-hand entrance into Google off of Amphitheatre Pkwy - there will be volunteers directing you to Charlie's Cafe
If you know of others in the area that may be interested in this initiative, please spread this word and invite them to join our mailing group in either of the following ways:
- Via Email - To join via email please send an email to sfhokies-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. After about 15 minutes you will receive a response to confirm your subscription.
- Via our website - To join via the alumni chapter's website please visit us at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sfhokies/ and click on the "Join This Group!" button.
Please respond if you can attend this event and let me know how many will be in your party on Sunday. Having a reasonably accurate count will help greatly in the planning effort. I appreciate that some will need to make a sacrifice in driving a long distance to attend, but believe this will be a Virginia Tech community gathering that you will not want to miss.
Best,

University of Pittsburgh
Danielle Colbert-Lewis, a VT alumni ('03) works for the University of Pittsburgh and has organized a vigil for the community of Pittsburgh to gather and show their support for the Hokies. The Pittsburgh Alumni chapter would like to invite all Hokie Alumni, family and friends to join us at this event. It will be held Monday April 23rd on the Cathedral Lawn on the UPitt campus in Oakland. It is a beautiful place right near Heinz chapel and the Cathedral of Learning. The vigil begins at 8:30 pm. I would also like to propose that all Hokie alumni meet prior to this vigil (7:30pm) at the nearby Schenely Plaza (directly across Forbes Ave) to come together as our more intimate community before joining the much larger group. It will be there that we will have candles and ribbons to hand out as well as cards to sign that will go to the local Hokie victims and their families. The Plaza is quite open so you should be able to see whereever us Hokies are gathering dressed in our Orange and Maroon - but lets say we meet under the big white tent (near the carosel). If you haven't heard of Schenely Plaza, it might be because it was just built less than a year ago - so check out www.schenleyplaza.org. As always, parking is tough in Oakland,so please plan accordingly. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call 412-260-2710.

Dr. Maria Sanchez and Dr. Ira Sorenson, members of the Virginia Tech Class of 2002 who are now mechanical engineering professors in the College of Engineering at Fresno State, will join President John D. Welty and Fresno State students at memorial from 9:30 to 10 a.m. in the Free Speech Area.

Sanchez and Sorensen also will participate in the dedication of the Virginia Tech Memorial Garden in front of the Henry Madden Library immediately following the tribute.
The couple – he from Selma, twenty miles south of Fresno, and she from Bogotá, Colombia – met at Virginia Tech while participating in a thermal radiation project, a courtship ensued and they were married in Blacksburg in 2001. For Monday’s tribute, she will be wearing a Hokies jacket and he a Hokies sweatshirt.
The pair both earned master’s and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech. They joined the Fresno State faculty in 2003. Sanchez’s father also earned a PhD at Virginia Tech.
“Virginia Tech – Remember, Discuss, Prepare” is presented by University Student Union Productions and the Division of Student Affairs for students, faculty, staff and the community, as part of the National Moment of Silence declared by Virginia Tech on Friday.

“It is our responsibility not only as students at The University of Toledo, but college students in general, to stand united and support our fellow collegiates across the country,” said Mike Betz, UT Student Government president. “We are all saddened and shocked that one individual could do this terrible act, but we truly have to unite and show our support to all that were affected by this tragedy.”
The UT community also is invited to attend a candlelight vigil in front of University Hall at 9:30 p.m. Monday.
“My heart goes out to the victims' family and friends,” Betz said. “The students at VT will be in Bre and my prayers.”

Columbine survivor to visit with Virginia Tech students
Peter Henderson was raised in Littleton, Colorado. He was a 16 year old sophomore at Columbine High School when a beautiful Tuesday morning became the darkest day of his life. He was trapped in the building for over three hours but made it out alive. Running past the bodies of two friends as the SWAT team evacuated the building, he knew that there would be more friends who couldn’t make it out. Peter survived what many of his friends did not.
Peter’s story is all too familiar this week as we mourn our loss at Virginia Tech. But his heart has been so drawn to Hokie students, faculty and friends that he is coming at his own expense to offer support, comfort, clarity, and encouragement by sharing his journey and the transformation he has experienced from tragedy to triumph.
Now the Sr. Youth Pastor at Living Way Church in Littleton, Colorado, Peter said; “God didn’t make the tragedy at Columbine—He took it and redeemed it for His purposes. It’s awesome for me to invest in the lives of students—knowing that God’s restoration is stronger than the most evil exploits of the enemy”.
You are invited to join Peter as he shares his story with us at:
The Bridge, Christiansburg Foursquare Church

Thursday April 26th and Friday April 27th at 7PM.

If you are able to attend, please wear maroon and orange. Students from SCAD’s film department will video the vigil, and the footage will be used in a video tribute the students are producing for students at VT.
