Hotlzman Alumni Center

The Alumni Center is named for William B. Holtzman of Edinburg, Va.

Holtzman earned his undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech in horticulture in 1959. Holtzman is president and founder of Holtzman Oil Corporation, the second largest employer in the Shenandoah Valley . He currently serves as Vice Chairman of the Campaign Steering Committee and on the Virginia Tech Foundation Board of Directors. In addition to his extraordinary support of the alumni and conference center, Holtzman has been a long-time supporter of university initiatives including the Corps of Cadets, the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, and the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies. For this generous support, the alumni center is named in his honor.

ARTIST HEADER

Have you driven through Virginia and seen the remnants of small communities? The signs announcing arrival in a place where there are no visible signs of life? The Lost Communities of Virginia project at the Community Design Assistance Center began with a curiosity about such places. Curiosity resulted in a drive-by survey of 2,600 small communities in the Commonwealth. Of these small places, 548 of them still retaining buildings were photographed by then CDAC Intern, Kirsten Sparenborg, a 2000 graduate of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. With the help of CAUS professors, the list was narrowed to 30 communities for further study that cover the breadth of Virginia’s geography, history, and community types. The photographic exhibit presents a sampling of the 30 communities that are the subject of the forthcoming Lost Communities of Virginia book.
