The Virginia Tech Alumni Association kicked off its annual HokieBird Fights Hunger campaign in Blacksburg on August 30, 2003.
Las Vegas Chapter coordinates a HokieBird Fights Hunger Campaign in their area
Chapter volunteers from around the country were on campus for their annual leadership training where the HokieBird himself helped kick off this community service project.
HokieBird Fights Hunger is the campaign slogan for chapters who provide food for individuals and families in need in a variety of different ways. The campaign was introduced by the Tampa Bay Chapter and the Middle Tennessee Chapter several years ago. Both of these chapters collected funds to donate turkeys to needy families during the holidays.
The concept was shared with other chapters and has been catching on ever since. Hokie Bird Fights Hunger has spread to volunteers feeding the needy at soup kitchens and homeless shelters, canned food drives, providing baskets of food, and purchasing turkeys.
