Through various fundraising events, the chapters of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association provide scholarships to students entering Virginia Tech each year. In 2005, 49 chapters awarded 150 scholarships totalling $145,350. Also, Alumni Honors Scholarships were awarded to 78 students totalling $215,000. The Roanoke Valley Chapter awarded a scholarship to Amanda Kroll in fall 2005 as one of its five scholarship recipients.

In AMANDA KROLL's own words...

Roanoke Valley Chapter Scholarship Recipient in 2005

Amanda Koll"I view this scholarship as a reward for all of the hard work and dedication that I spent in high school. As a Biochemistry major, Virginia Tech was my first choice for college because it has such a strong reputation for its Chemistry and Biochemistry departments. I know that I made the correct decision in choosing Tech because I love everything about the university, from the classes and professors to the football games and student programs. This scholarship was very beneficial to me, and extremely helpful in paying for part of my freshman tuition."

As a freshman Hokie and part of the Residential Leadership Community, which is a themed on-campus living community, Amanda participated in for-credit courses on leadership. The second semester of her leadership course was entitled "Alumni Relations." Throughout this course she was able to work closely with Virginia Tech alumni and the Alumni Association. She said, "Through the projects and presentations that we worked on in class, I felt that I was able to give back to the Alumni Association which was so generous to aid in my education."
