College Advisory Boards & Roundtables

All eight colleges within the university have them. Here are examples of alumni providing valuable expertise and leadership to their colleges...

College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences Alumni Advisory Board

Advisory BoardThe mission statement of the CLAHS Alumni Advisory Board is to assist the College in connecting and communicating with its alumni and those who value CLAHS programs and outreach activities. With that goal in mind, the Board meets twice a year to plan and execute ideas to promote and strengthen the College's involvement and outreach with alumni, administration, faculty, and students.

The CLAHS Alumni Advisory Board is comprised of alumni and friends spanning the years and degrees of the College, each one wanting to now serve the College that served them so well. The current president of the board, Chrissy Jenkins, said "I am thrilled to be able to serve the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences in this capacity. It feels great to be able to give something back to a College that gave me so much. I look forward to seeing CLAHS alumni of all ages become involved in increasing numbers."

As this College has evolved over the years, so has its Board. Dean Jerry Niles emphasized "One of the unanticipated benefits of the merger between the Liberal Arts and Human Sciences and Education has been the creation of a new family of over 40,000 alums and the newly reconstituted College Alumni Advisory Board. I believe our Alumni Advisory Board has played an essential role in getting our alumni comfortable with the merger. The members of the Board, from a wide variety of programs, have quickly bonded around their commitment to see our new enterprise succeed. Their energy, enthusiasm and creative ideas in starting new traditions have been invaluable assets in our attempts to establish a new college identity, increase visibility and connect with as many members as possible in our alumni base."

College of Science Roundtable

Round TableThe College of Science Roundtable is comprised of 60 individuals consisting of alumni and friends of the college. The purpose of the Roundtable is to provide advice and counsel to the dean and his office on subjects pertaining to and affecting the alumni and the college's general public relations effort on a state, regional, national and international level. The Roundtable serves as a sounding board, allowing the dean and his office to share ideas on the development of the college and its programs. It provides and promotes interaction among the alumni, administration, faculty and students of the college.

The Roundtable meets twice a year during the fall and spring semesters. The fall meeting is normally held off campus and the spring meeting is held on the Blacksburg campus. The spring Roundtable meeting culminates with a Scholarship Banquet where the Roundtable members honor the Dean's Scholars, a select group of students who are finalists for the Roundtable Scholarship. The finalists are selected by a campus committee and are interviewed by members of the Roundtable.

Dean Lay Nam Chang adds "The College Roundtable has been a constant source of advice, encouragement, and support for all that we do. Their loyalty to the College, and the University, has been and continues to be critical to our moving forward toward the goals we have set for ourselves. I am truly humbled and honored by the degree of commitment they have shown to all of our enterprises."
