Virginia Tech Alumni Association News - Spring 2002
Alumni and Conference Center
Facts at a Glance
Why is an Alumni Center needed?
- To house alumni when they visit, and to accommodate expanded programs to serve them
- To accommodate professional and continuing education conferences and conventions
- To attract alumni and friends to visit the campus more often
What facilities will it include?
- Grand Hall "living room"
- Large ballroom with capacity of up to 1,500
- High-tech assembly hall and conference rooms
- Virginia Tech history museum, library and gallery
- 150 room hotel, with restaurant and dining rooms
- Convenient parking and adjacent overflow parking
- Alumni Association staff and conference administration offices
Where will it be built?
Along Prices Fork Road and West Campus Drive, near the Duck Pond, on part of the current campus golf course. The course will be reconfigured to nine holes with a driving range. Plans are underway to provide a new 18-hole course nearby for students, alumni and other guests.
How will donors be recognized?
There are naming opportunities for rooms and spaces inside the alumni center, hotel and conference center for $25,000 and higher gifts/pledges. Also various size paving stones will cover an outdoor plaza area with donor names inscribed on each for $1,000 to $24,999 gifts/pledges. All donor names will be included in a permanent Register of Donors.
What will it cost?
This is the best news. . . $16.2 million in gifts must be raised to leverage another $27.3 million in additional support, including revenue bonds for a hotel and conference center operation and net proceeds from the conversion of the current Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center to graduate student housing and seminar rooms. A true win-win for the university and for our alumni.
What is the timetable?
As sufficient gifts are committed to the project, construction will begin in early 2003, with an anticipated completion in 2005.

With Your Support, We Can Build A Home of Our Own
We need your support for this once-in-a-lifetime campaign to create "A Home of Our Own" for all alumni...
Make your gift or pledge in support of the new Alumni and Conference Center today. Rooms and spaces both inside and outside the center are designated for commemorative naming opportunities. The Alumni Terrace, illustrated above, has five Hokie Stone paver sizes for commemorative inscriptions, beginning at the $1,000 gift/pledge level. Pledge fulfillments may extend over five years. Donors may choose to have their own names inscribed, or they may designate memorial or honor tributes to a family member or friend.
All donor names will be included in the "Register of Donors" for permanent display in the Alumni Center.
