Each Year the Alumni Association Recognizes Outstanding Chapters and Chapter Leaders at the Annual Chapter Officers Forum
Outstanding Chapter Awards
The Outstanding Chapter Award recognizes a limited number of chapters whose activities have met or exceeded guidelines established by the Alumni Association. Winners are selected by the Alumni Association staff. In addition to Achievement Award requirements, all of these chapters provide scholarships to local students, work with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions in student recruitment, sponsor a variety of social events and provide opportunities for alumni to keep up with university news. Winners receive a banner and $500 towards their chapter scholarship fund.
The Atlanta Chapter held their annual holiday party with featured guest Provost Peggy Meszaros, a Braves baseball game and pregame party, met with Lucinda Roy on her book tour through Atlanta and hosted monthly happy hours. They sponsored TV watching parties, attended a women's volleyball game against Georgia Tech and cosponsored their first annual golf tournament with the Hokie Club which raised $6,400 for student scholarships. They hosted a freshman send-off picnic, and raised scholarship funds through sponsoring a concession stand at the Bell South Golf Classic. They gave 4 scholarships totaling $4000.
The Baltimore Chapter held their 32nd annual Crab Feast, a scholarship banquet, a wine tasting and visit to an Orioles game. They held their second annual golf tournament, attended the WVU football game, held game watching parties and monthly happy hours. They participated in Habitat for Humanity and gave a $1500 scholarship.
The Charlotte Chapter. The Charlotte Chapter sponsored an evening with Paul Torgersen, a holiday social, summer picnic, a zip code party and monthly happy hours. They attended a baseball game and picnic, hosted a pregame party for the UNCC basketball game, TV watching parties and supported Corey Moore when he received the Nagurski Award by providing fan support in the hotel lobby. Corey was duly impressed and ended up having a lengthy conversation with those gathered. They raised money for scholarships through a Panther's concession stand, the sale of Entertainment Books and sponsored their first annual golf tournament which raised $3,600. They sponsored a water station at the Observer Marathon, and gave 2 scholarships totaling $3000.
The East Tennessee Chapter hosted an academic night with Bill Snizek, a prospective student night, and TV watching parties. They traveled to Blacksburg to attend a basketball game and sponsored the Hokie Smokey Classic. They participate in the Adopt-a-highway program and gave 4 scholarships totaling $2750.
The Fredericksburg Chapter. The Fredericksburg Chapter sponsored their annual crab feast, scholarship dinner with Bud Robertson and an admissions information night for students. They sponsored monthly happy hours, TV watching parties, a bus trip to the UVA basketball game and cosponsored their annual golf tournament with the Hokie Club which raised over $17,000 for student scholarships. They attended the Hokie Day at the General Assembly and started a new community service project called "Hokies for Literate Kids Book Drive". They gave 6 scholarships for Fall 2000 totaling $6,000.
The Middle Tennessee Chapter. The Middle Tennessee Chapter sponsored an evening with Bud Robertson and another with Clark Jones, a new student picnic and scholarship awards banquet. They provided care packages to students from the Nashville area attending Virginia Tech and presented a Saber to the Corps of Cadets in honor of retired General Musser. They hosted TV watching parties and a Hokie Scramble golf tournament. They raised money through concession sales at Starwood and gave away turkeys during the holidays. They gave 2 scholarships totaling $2,000.
The New River Valley Chapter. The New River Valley Chapter hosted their annual scholarship fund-raisers, Hokie Celebration and their golf tournament. They hosted a scholarship banquet with Charles Steger, a financial planning seminar and attended the Black Dog Jazz Festival at Chateau Morissette and a Roanoke Express Hockey Game. They hosted TV watching parties, monthly happy hours and organized a state-wide Virginia Tech Day at King's Dominion. They awarded the most scholarships of any chapter giving a total of 14 worth $13,250.
The North Alabama Chapter. The North Alabama Chapter sponsored an evening with Bud Robertson, their annual picnic and monthly Hokie Happy Hours. They held TV watching parties and tailgate parties in Blacksburg. They helped build a handicap ramp for CASA for the needy. They gave 2 scholarships totaling $2,000.
The Northern Virginia Chapter. The Northern Virginia Chapter sponsored their annual chili-fest, Hokie Open golf tournament and a gathering at the Gold Cup races. They hosted a very successful job fair earning the chapter over $11,000 for scholarships, had a booth at the Fairfax County Fair, and monthly happy hours and TV watching parties. They organized a ski trip and fielded several recreational sports teams, including just winning the championship of the Capital Alumni Network League Tournament. They participated in Toys for Tots, the Red-Cross Waterfront festival, Hokie blood drive and served meals at the Ronald McDonald House. They gave $7,500 in scholarships for Fall 2000.
The Research Triangle Chapter. The Research Triangle Chapter sponsored an Evening with Lucinda Roy, attended a Durham Bulls and Hurricane Game, and sponsored monthly happy hours and TV watching parties. They volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and gave 2 scholarships totaling $2,000.
The Richmond Chapter. The Richmond Chapter held a Dinner with Bud Robertson, Hokie Day at the Park, holiday party and a "Back in Time from 6 to 9" Party. They hosted a pregame party prior to the UVA game, monthly happy hours, TV watching parties, and bus trips to games. They fielded a coed softball team, attended a Richmond Braves game, and cosponsored, the O&M golf tournament. They participated in the Hokie Day at the General Assembly, the Crestar Walk America and sold Entertainment Books to raise money for scholarships. They gave 9 scholarships totaling $9,000.
The Shenandoah Chapter. The Shendandoah Chapter co-hosted a luncheon with the Rotary Club that featured David Kohl, their annual Hokie Holiday Social and Apple Blossom Social. They raised money for scholarships through their 12th annual Greater Hokie Open which produced an increase of 80% over the previous year. They hosted TV watching parties and two bus trips to football games. They participated in the "Feed the Needy" canned food drive and awarded 3 scholarships totaling $3,000.
The Southwest Virginia Chapter. The Southwest Virginia Chapter held their annual family picnic, holiday social, a dinner in Russell County and evening with Bud Robertson. For community service they participated in Adopt-a-Highway and local recycling program. They raised money for scholarships through Food Lion Days and their ever popular Cow Chip Bingo raffle. They gave 5 scholarships totaling $2,500.
The Tampa Bay Chapter. The Tampa Bay Chapter held an Evening with Jim Wightman, sponsored a golf tournament and TV watching parties. To raise money for scholarships they held a raffle for Buccaneer game tickets. Tampa Bay was the chapter who introduced the "Hokie Bird Fights Hunger Campaign" which delivers food to the needy during the holidays. They gave a $1,000 scholarship.
The Tidewater Chapter. The Tidewater Chapter hosted their annual Pig Pickin' and Plant Sale, a Casino Night, holiday party and dinner with Bud Robertson. In the area of community service they participated in the Hope Haven BBQ fund-raiser, toy drive and WHRO pledge drive. They sponsored a golf tournament, attended a Tides game and participated in Hokie Day at the General Assembly. They gave 8 scholarships totaling $10,000.
